A GenAI studio · Afton, Minnesota

Ideas, taken from zero to flight.

Prairie Birdhouse is a small studio that builds bespoke AI software — working prototypes in days, not decks in quarters. Everything runs, and every project gets a bird.

The workshop

Bespoke GenAI, built the way a birdhouse is built.

By hand, to fit the bird. We work with organizations that have a real problem and no appetite for a six-month discovery phase. You bring the problem; we bring working software fast enough to argue with.

Stage 01

Hatch

Zero to a working prototype in days — real AI, real data, something you can put in front of real people.

Stage 02

Fledge

Prototype to pilot. We run it with your actual visitors, customers, or staff, and shape it around the truth instead of the plan.

Stage 03

Fly

Pilot to production. Hardened, monitored, priced honestly, and handed over in a state your team can live with.

The aviary — a field guide to our work

Every project gets a bird.

Studio ventures and client work, catalogued like the field guides we grew up with. Gold dot means it's fledged and flying — go see it live.

Plate No. 01
Magpie
Pica hudsonia
Fledged — on view
Field marks

The collector of the bird world — and our museum lab. Five working AI experiences across the whole visitor journey: an always-on concierge, a Mary Shelley you can interrogate, a hand-drawn character that guides kids through the galleries, self-serve field-trip booking, and one-of-one merch.

Habitat

Museums, historical societies, theaters, nature centers — big curiosity, small staff.

Plate No. 02
alwayswren
Troglodytes aedon
Fledged — in the field
Line-drawn wren, the alwayswren mark Fig. 02 — the house wren
Field marks

Small, tireless, and singing before sunrise — the wren does more work per gram than any bird on the prairie. alwayswren is an AI operations manager for owner-run businesses: it takes every inquiry, qualifies the leads, drafts the quotes and follow-ups, and hands the owner a tidy queue to approve.

Habitat

Owner-operated service businesses — in the field with a landscaping company now, more trades to follow.

Plate No. 03
kestrel
Falco sparverius
In the nest
Line-drawn kestrel, the kestrel mark Fig. 03 — the american kestrel
Field marks

North America's smallest falcon hunts by hovering — holding perfectly still in the wind, seeing everything. kestrel watches social signals, Amazon movement, and retail scan data to spot consumer brands about to break out, before anyone else in the room has heard of them.

Habitat

Consumer-goods rep groups and sales teams — anywhere "what's about to be big?" is the whole job.

The backyard flock

Not everything needs a business model.

Some things get built because a family needs a dog, a college kid keeps missing taco day, or a photo library gets out of hand. Small birds, real problems, all running.

Spotted · Twin Cities

WoofWoof

Every adoptable dog in the Twin Cities, one search. Thirteen rescue sites scraped hourly so you don't have to refresh them all before someone else gets your dog.

Spotted · a dining hall

The Menu Pigeon

A Discord bot that carries the dining-hall menu straight to a hungry student's DMs every morning. Nobody misses taco day on its watch.

Spotted · 40,000 photos deep

Photo Curator

AI vision reads an out-of-control photo library, scores every shot, and surfaces the keepers. The family album, rescued from the camera roll.

The feeder stays full

Small birds land here between client work. Got a weird little problem software should have solved by now? It might be next.

About the studio

One builder, many birds, all Minnesota.

Prairie Birdhouse is run by Jon Piepho — a GenAI practitioner by day, a gallery-runner by history, and a builder by compulsion. The distance between "what if" and "here, try it" has never been shorter, and most organizations still don't have anyone to walk it with them.

We keep the roster small on purpose. Fewer projects, built better, each one flown all the way home.
